Allowing Children to Contribute

“A human being feels able and competent only so long as he is permitted to contribute as much or more than he has contributed to him.” – L. Ron Hubbard, from the Scientology Online Course on Children

Parents do a bazillion things for their kids.   It’s part of being a parent.

After a while, though, kids start to catch on to the fact that you’re always doing something for them.  It’s worse when you have to turn down all their pleadings to “play with them” and “make a train track with me, daddy, please?” and so forth because you’re too busy doing something for them.

My kids have certainly picked up on this.  Times when they desperately want my involvement in what they’re doing, but see that I can’t because I’m too busy cleaning the living room, doing the dishes, or picking up after them.

It’s a trick, then, to work out ways for the children to contribute back to the general effort.   How to let them do some work too – work that they feel good about?

How have you accomplished this with your kids?

For more on this subject, please read the full article the above quote is from.   It’s from the free on-line course on the caring of children, available from the Scientology Volunteer Ministers.
