Space and the Beauty of Home Study

There’s an uncanny aspect to studying my religion at home, in that I always seem to happen upon things in my study that pertain directly to what I’m dealing with in life.

For example, my wife and I were doing our weekly study this Sunday on our Scientology extension courses, and I came across this one:

“One is as much as he has space and as much as he can alter and occupy that space.”

L. Ron Hubbard – Scientology 8-8008

My wife, studying outside this weekend.

This, from Scientology 8-8008 is a pretty deep one that gets deeper the more you think about it, especially when it comes to the topic of staying sane in these trying times of social distancing and isolation.

Some people tend to feel like they’re the effect of what’s going on in the world. The more you feel the effect of things, the less you’re being you and the closer you’re being to just being a “thing”. The most “thing” you can get is being a dead fellow, and that’s not what any of us are after.

But just getting yourself a space that you can create upon, that you can have and occupy and change, that alone serves to make you more YOU.

This past weekend, aside from getting out a few times in a nearly-empty 3000-acre mountain bike trail system with the family, my wife and I have been creating our own space as well. We’ve been fashioning a new set of shelves from a mix of store-bought wood and some hickory that we chainsawed out of fallen trees from our yard.

While doing all this the kids managed to create (all on their own) a fully-enclosed tent shelter out of fallen tree branches and leaves, and even convinced us to let them sleep outside last night in their creation.

I mean – it only lasted about 2 hours before they decided that the sounds of nocturnal animals along with the cold was a bit much for them, but STILL – they were loving creating and altering and occupying their own space.

So, just remember, keep creating your space!

  1. The whole concept of creating your own space is so true and the people that I’ve encountered during this pandemic who were doing well were doing just that in some way. They weren’t under house arrest. They decided to really use this time to make something meaningful. The number of people who have reconnected with their families; have really started doing things with and as a family is amazing. So that goes back to the concept of space and making your own. It would seem to be the starting point as then you can do something in that space
